96% of State Employees Choose Controversial Wellness Plan

Posted on September 21, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized |

The dust has settled from the state employee concessions deal and related debates, and the Connecticut Post has an interesting outcome.

Remember the wellness plan that, by many accounts, sunk the concessions deal the first time around?

Today, 96 percent of state employees covered by the state’s healthcare plan have enrolled in that plan, blowing away the 50 percent that Gov. Malloy’s administration estimated would enroll.

It’s unclear at this point what this high enrollment will do to the state’s savings; at the assumed 50 percent enrollment, the state predicted a savings of $102.5 million a year. Much of those savings, however, were from the added premiums ($100 a month) of state employees who weren’t participating.

Time will tell what this high enrollment does to Connecticut’s budget, but for the time being, the prevention-focused wellness plan will hopefully lead to some healthier Connecticut citizens.

Are you surprised by the high enrollment?
