Costly Connecticut: Farewell, Colonials!

Posted on September 6, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , |

Are you eagerly awaiting another season of professional football? Regrettably, fans of Connecticut’s minor league franchise Hartford Colonials are undoubtedly in a funk, given that the United Football League (UFL) decided last month to dissolve the Nutmeg State’s home team.

Oddly enough, the League opted to do so despite a reasonable amount of support and a solid ownership base. Nevertheless, the UFL needed to downsize to four teams, and decided that either the Colonials or the Virginia Destroyers had to go.

So why did the League choose to keep the Destroyers and disband the Colonials? According to UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue, it costs as much as four times more money to play games at state-owned Rentschler Field than in Virginia. Our government leaders built a state-of-the-art facility there for the UConn Huskies football team, one that is apparently far too costly to serve as a home for privately owned minor league franchises.

Incidentally, there is no need to feel sorry for Colonials owner Bill Mayer. As a consolation prize, and to address the fact that the Destroyers previously had no stable ownership base, the UFL is reportedly considering the assignment of the Virginia franchise to him! Thus, the only individuals that appear to be left out in the cold by these transactions are the Connecticut residents and fans who supported the Colonials throughout its sole season in the UFL.
